"Break over Jaws"

Films: The Beast (1996)

Alias: None

Type: Natural

Location: Ocean

Height/Weight: Twice that of an average Giant Squid.

Affiliation: Neutral

Summary: Giant octopi may make you unsettled, but those don't exist. What does exist though are gigantic versions of their relatives. Giant squid sightings are mostly rare, but just imagine if one mustered up the will to turn our local beaches into a feeding ground...

History: There's something off about Grave's Point, Washington, and it's not just the name or the idiot running the joint. There's a massive giant squid patrolling the waters now, dragging down anyone who dares swim in its turf. There are those who just want it dead, while others want to put it on display.

Notable Kills: Drags a submersible under the water and crushes the people likes a nutcracker to a peanut shell.

Final Fate: The folks manage to kill the squid...'s baby. The mom (or dad) spends the rest of the film making them pay until the final confrontation, where it is set on fire and blown up along with the rest of the ship.

Powers/Abilities: None

Weakness: Anything conventional.

Scariness Factor: 3.5-Crappy CGI aside, there's hardly any doubting the intense fear one feels knowing there's a super-strong cephalopod in the waters waiting to snatch you up and drag you into a bone-crushing beak. A lot of the practical effects work fairly decent too.

Trivia: -The original Peter Benchley novel this film was based on has a significantly different plot, even if it also involves a monster squid. It mostly takes place in the Bermuda territories, and in the end the squid gets ripped in half by a sperm whale.

-The largest species of squid is the aptly-named colossal squid. This beast is rarely, if ever, seen in action, but judging by the specimens we've collected, these creatures grew up to 46 feet long and weighed up to 750 kilograms. A true sea monster if we ever saw one, especially with the claw-laced suckers.

Within that black void, tearing death awaits.

What were you expecting? The Kraken?
Lousy day to go out to sea, eh?

She's mad because the sea is now Mountain Dew.

May wanna paddle faster there.

The last thing Mr. Krabs saw when Squidward snapped.
